Letterpress Type – hand setting and compositions. Like the old days

It was slow and precise. Then machines that set text appeared rattling out 9,000 characters an hour, 24 7; save for maintenance. In the 50’s I remember the FOC- Father of the Chapel, saying, ‘Don’t worry your job is safe, been around for 600 years. Jim referred to rumours a man at Bromley in Kent 20 miles from where I worked at a large printer at Chatham in Kent. This man had a machine called a ‘Word Processor,’ and could set in a week, more type than several hundred Compositors in the county could do in a month. Some years later and when Rupert Murdoch virtually shut down London’s Fleet Street, thousands of Tradesmen were out of work. What happened you see was. Typists could type text/copy it was transferred to a material that...

Short Stories Hut 42.

I’ve adapted these shorts from either: longer manuscripts or action scenes from my screenplays that I believe make exciting reads. This is from Where the Devil says Goodnight. Gradually I will be adding more. If you like do let me know, and I’ll write more. Thanks. Hut 42. WW2 Gulag, Siberia. Yaya – 442 miles south of The Arctic Circle. The needle on the Richter scale of misery is about to set new records. WWII spun into top gear for this European aristocrat after she is accused of spying and sentenced to 10-years. Days before the 23rd birthday she falls from an ice-covered slatted cattle wagon into the crisp freezing Siberian snow. The buzz-word in the Gulag is surviving.  5,500 mostly innocent ladies subsist in the brutal, cold conditions....

Bellyflops. Stories for the Child in all of us

The sheer volume of the Animation concepts is mind-boggling. As such, I simply have not had the time to develop any further, save for a synopsis or...

Letterpress Wood Type for sale

This gallery shows just some of the cases of the type for sale. All is 150+ years old and made in York England by the renowned manufacturer Robert DeLittle established in 1888. There’s the photo of Robert’s catalogue I purchased just as he donated all his machinery to a then-proposed printing museum in London. Included are photos of one magnificent Mahogany cabinets I restored, I still have a double that holds 36 cases. Metal type sticks to set metal type and one of my hardwood ones-for wood letters used for posters- as posters were large and lead type far too heavy to move from a composing room to the bed of a printing machine. If you have an idea of the size and style of cases or letters you want to refer to give me the name of a similar one on your...
